I, Kathyrn Neubauer-Johns am a contemporary representational painter and storyteller, collage artist and sculptor, pet portraitist, and ornamentor who works with acrylics, oils, watercolor, pencil, pastels, concrete, glass, mixed media and found discarded/disposable objects to create my large canvases, ornaments and sculptures. I received my Masters of Fine Arts from the University of California Berkeley. After living in the San Francisco Bay area for 25 years I relocated to Omaha, Nebraska where I resided for 14 years. I now live and maintain an art studio in the Desert Hills area, North Valley, Phoenix, Arizona.
I have exhibited in art galleries in art gallery Arizona, California, Nebraska, and Texas. Her work can be found in private collections in the Pacific Northwest, Arizona, California, Colorado, New York City; Dallas, Texas, South Dakota, and Omaha, Nebraska.
As an artist, in preparation for a painting I use meaningful images from photographs of landscapes and reality augmenting and enlarging portions of them as if they were being looked at under a microscope. Dreams of completed paintings, memories and obsessions in my life become meaningful stories often portrayed in my work. Objects such as metal, embossed pewter (Repujado), glass, wood, beads, weeds, flower petals, string, bubble wrap, magazine advertisements and custom paper are compulsively saved and in many cases are then secured or woven into the canvas. These objects of my obsessions become part of the story, images and often ambiguous purpose behind the meaning of the piece, thus becoming obsessed with telling the final story. While the canvas may appear desecrated the objects emerge for the surprise of it all - like the surprise on ones face as a gift is being opened.
The 4- inch glass ornaments created are one-of-a-kind, grandiose in their confined inner space, appearing at close range, larger then her average 5’ X 6’ paintings. Using imported glass, a specialized process is used to insert the acrylic paint into the ornament before manipulation with special tools. Combinations of glass, foils, glitters and color enhancers may be added to give each fine art collectible their own identity. Most ornaments are painted only on the inside. Others are painted both on the inside and outside. Abstractions, realistic landscapes, plant life, animals of Arizona and pets are my specialty.
The lawn ornaments are designed and molded out of concrete. The finished 4, 6, 8, and 12 inch ornaments are fabricated to look like brass, copper, steel and/or iron. Objects are implanted or fossilized into the piece (glass, found objects of nature, metal, etc.) The final piece is finished with a patina then protected with a weather resistant UV coating. The patina will age, as all metals age in the outdoors, over time. However, the patina intensifies the colors (i.e., like copper does as it turns green).
